Your nose does all sorts of wonderful things other than just produce snot and boogies (although that’s pretty cool in itself).
One thing it does is acts kind of like an air conditioning unit for your body. As you breathe air in your nose makes it all warm and moist before it goes into your lungs. Your nose also removes all of the bacteria and rubbish (which is where snot comes in).
When you breathe out your nose does the opposite! It makes sure too much warm air and moisture doesn’t escape (handy when you are in the Antarctic although not so handy when your nose hairs freeze up).
And of course it helps you smell things! In fact your nose is something like 10,000 times more sensitive than your taste-buds and it even helps you taste things (which is why holding your nose when you eat broccoli helps if you do it right).
Smells are detected in special receptor cells called olfactory neurons and they feed the information to your brain. Cool huh?!
And who said noses were just for storing snot and bogies!
Bet you didn’t nose that!
